Nasal Disorders

Nasal surgeries encompass surgical interventions performed for both aesthetic and functional purposes. These surgeries are generally done to correct breathing issues, address structural deformities of the nose, or improve its aesthetic appearance. Here are some common types of nasal surgeries:

1. Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetic Surgery)

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose. Changes are made in areas like the nasal bridge, tip, or width to enhance the nose’s overall look.

Applications: Aesthetic concerns, congenital or injury-induced nasal deformities, breathing problems.

2. Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated or displaced nasal septum (the cartilage and bone wall dividing the nasal cavity). This surgery aims to alleviate nasal congestion and improve breathing issues.

Applications: Deviated septum, chronic nasal congestion, sinusitis.

3. Sinus Surgery (FESS – Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery)

This surgery is performed to remove blockages that hinder sinus drainage and alleviate chronic sinusitis symptoms. FESS is a minimally invasive technique done using endoscopic tools.

Applications: Chronic sinusitis, sinus polyps, sinus blockages.

4. Turbinate Surgery (Turbinoplasty)

This surgery aims to relieve nasal congestion caused by enlarged turbinates (nasal conchae). The procedure reduces the size of the turbinates to open the nasal airways.

Applications: Nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis, chronic nasal blockage.

5. Nasal Polyp Surgery

This is the surgical removal of polyps (benign growths) that develop in the nose and sinuses. The procedure is performed endoscopically to improve sinus drainage and airflow.

Applications: Chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps.

6. Nasal Reconstruction

Nasal reconstruction involves rebuilding lost nasal tissue due to trauma, post-cancer surgery, or congenital deformities. This procedure includes both aesthetic and functional improvements.

Applications: Post-trauma nasal deformities, reconstruction after cancer surgery, congenital nasal structural issues.

7. Nasal Valve Surgery

The nasal valve is the narrowest part within the nose, and airflow relies on its proper function. Surgical intervention is performed in cases of nasal valve collapse or narrowing to strengthen this area and improve airflow.

Applications: Nasal valve narrowing, nasal congestion.

8. Alarplasty

Alarplasty is a surgical procedure to alter the width or shape of the nasal wings (ala). This surgery is aimed at improving the general aesthetic appearance of the nose.Applications: Excessively wide nasal wings, deformities in the shape of the nostrils.Nasal surgeries are planned and performed based on both aesthetic and medical needs. These surgeries are conducted to improve the patient’s overall health and quality of life. It is essential to consult an ENT specialist to determine the most suitable type of surgery.

Surgery for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

In snoring and sleep apnea surgery, various procedures are applied to open the airways and help the patient breathe more comfortably. Sleep apnea is a condition that causes breathing to stop briefly during sleep and is often associated with snoring. Here are some common procedures in snoring and sleep apnea surgery:

1. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)

In this procedure, excess tissue in the uvula, soft palate, and back of the throat is removed. The goal is to widen the airways and improve airflow.Applications: UPPP is typically used for patients with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

2. Extended Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (EUPP)

This is a more extensive version of UPPP. More tissue is removed to further widen the airways.Applications: It may be applied in severe cases of obstructive sleep apnea.

3. Genioglossus Advancement

The back of the tongue is advanced toward the jawbone. This prevents the tongue from blocking the airway during sleep.Applications: Used in patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.

4. Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA)

The upper and lower jaw are moved forward. This widens the airways and improves airflow.Applications: Used in severe sleep apnea cases when other surgical options are insufficient.

5. Nasal Surgery

Procedures like septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and other nasal surgeries are performed to open nasal airways. The aim is to improve airflow through the nose, alleviating snoring and sleep apnea.Applications: For patients with nasal congestion and sleep apnea.

6. Hyoid Suspension

The hyoid bone is pulled forward and secured, preventing the base of the tongue from blocking the airway.Applications: May be applied in sleep apnea patients with airway obstruction related to the base of the tongue.

7. Tongue Base Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency energy is used to shrink excess tissue at the base of the tongue, opening the airways.Applications: For patients with sleep apnea caused by obstruction at the base of the tongue.

8. Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation

A device is implanted to stimulate the hypoglossal nerve. This increases muscle tone in the tongue, preventing it from blocking the airway during sleep.Applications: Used for patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea who do not respond to CPAP therapy.

9. Tracheostomy

A small hole is made in the neck to create a direct airway to the trachea. This procedure bypasses the obstruction in the airways, allowing the patient to breathe.Applications: Used as a last resort in very severe sleep apnea cases where other treatments have failed. These surgical options can provide significant improvements in quality of life for patients with snoring and sleep apnea. Before deciding on surgery, the patient’s condition is thoroughly evaluated to determine the most suitable treatment method. Surgical treatment is generally considered when other options (such as CPAP devices, oral appliances) are insufficient.
