Pediatric ENT Antalya: which conditions are covered?

Pediatric ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions are the problems that affect the ears, nose, throat, adenoids and neck during childhood. In children these areas develop differently from adults: the Eustachian tube, which connects the ear to the nose, is shorter and more horizontal, while the adenoids and tonsils reach their largest size in the preschool years. These differences explain why children experience some ENT problems more often.

Recurrent throat infections, snoring, sleeping with the mouth open, fluid in the ear, frequent middle ear infections, nosebleeds, sinusitis and allergic rhinitis are the problems most often seen in pediatric ENT. Most of them resolve with simple treatment; some, however, need careful assessment because they can affect the child's sleep, hearing, speech and school performance.

On this page you will find which problems to watch for at your child's age, how the examination is done, and when you should see a specialist without delay. We have also tried to answer the questions most often asked by families contacting us about pediatric ENT in Antalya.

Common problems by age

Each stage of childhood has its own typical ear, nose and throat problems. Knowing what to watch for at your child's age helps problems be noticed early.

Ages 0–3: ears and hearing

In infancy and early childhood, the most common problems are middle ear infections and fluid in the ear. Because children of this age cannot describe their pain, restlessness, waking at night, tugging at the ear, fever and refusing to feed may be the first signs.

Hearing is the foundation of speech development. Even if a child has passed the newborn hearing screening, hearing should always be re-assessed if the child does not respond to sounds, does not turn when their name is called, or is late to start talking. Children with long-standing fluid in the ear may need ear tube insertion.

Ages 3–7: adenoids, tonsils and snoring

The preschool years are when the adenoids and tonsils are at their largest. Snoring, sleeping with the mouth open, pauses in breathing during sleep, frequent throat infections and a nasal-sounding voice are common at these ages. Poor sleep quality can lead to daytime tiredness, irritability and poor concentration.

Enlarged adenoids are also one of the most common causes of fluid in the ear, so snoring and ear problems often occur together in this age group. The most common reason for removing the tonsils in this age group is that, together with the adenoids, they narrow the upper airway. For details, see our page on adenoids and tonsils in children.

Ages 7–12: nose and sinuses

In school-age children, nosebleeds, a blocked nose, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis are more common. Nosebleeds usually come from the delicate blood vessels at the front of the nose and can be controlled with simple measures. However, bleeding that recurs often or lasts a long time should be assessed.

A runny nose lasting more than ten days, postnasal drip, night-time cough and headache can be signs of sinusitis in children. In children with allergic rhinitis, sneezing, an itchy nose and watery eyes increase when the seasons change. You can read more in our article on signs of sinusitis in children.

Tonsil and adenoid problems

The tonsils and adenoids are an important part of the immune system in childhood. In some children, however, they become inflamed often or grow large enough to narrow the airway. Tonsillitis several times a year can cause missed school days and frequent antibiotic use.

The treatment decision depends on how often the episodes occur and how they affect the child's sleep. Not every large tonsil needs surgery; in children with mild symptoms, monitoring and medication may be enough. Surgery is considered in cases of marked snoring, sleep apnea or very frequent recurrent infections.

Fluid in the ear and hearing problems

Fluid in the ear is one of the most common ear problems in childhood and is often painless. That makes it hard to notice; reduced hearing may be the only sign. Fluid in the ear should be investigated in children who turn up the TV, respond late when called, or whose speech lags behind that of their peers.

A large share of fluid build-up clears up on its own within a few months. If fluid lasts longer than three months and affects hearing, ear tube insertion comes into consideration. Hearing problems that are noticed early and treated correctly can be resolved without harming the child's speech and learning.

Nosebleeds and a blocked nose

Nosebleeds are common in children and, although they often look frightening, they are usually not serious. Dry air, nose picking, allergic rhinitis and colds make the blood vessels at the front of the nose more fragile. During a nosebleed, tilting the child's head slightly forward and pinching the soft part of the nose for 10 minutes stops most bleeds.

Using a humidifier in the room in dry weather, protecting the inside of the nose with moisturizing creams recommended by your doctor, and keeping the child's nails short are simple but effective ways to prevent nosebleeds. Tilting the head back during a nosebleed is not recommended, because it makes blood run into the throat.

Bleeding that recurs often, lasts a long time or comes from both sides should be assessed. A blocked nose can have different causes, such as allergy, enlarged adenoids, a deviated nasal septum or a foreign body in the nose. A one-sided, foul-smelling nasal discharge, especially in young children, suggests there may be a foreign body in the nose. For more on nosebleeds, see our article on causes of frequent nosebleeds in children.

Allergic rhinitis in children

Allergic rhinitis is an increasingly common problem in children. Bouts of sneezing, an itchy nose, a clear runny nose, a blocked nose and watery eyes are typical symptoms. In some children symptoms appear only in certain seasons, in others all year round. Children who constantly rub their nose may develop a horizontal line across the nose.

Allergic rhinitis does not only affect the nose; it is also linked to enlarged adenoids, fluid in the ear, sinusitis and sleep problems. Treatment includes avoiding allergens, nasal sprays and, when needed, treatment planned together with an allergy specialist. When the allergy is under control, other ENT complaints often improve as well.

Snoring in children

Mild snoring now and then, especially during a cold, can be normal. However, loud snoring that happens almost every night may be a sign of an underlying problem. The most common cause of snoring in children is enlarged adenoids and tonsils; allergies and a blocked nose can also contribute.

When snoring is accompanied by pauses in breathing during sleep, sleeping with the mouth open, night sweats and frequent waking, sleep apnea is suspected. Untreated sleep apnea can affect a child's growth, behavior and school performance. For this reason, it is recommended that a child who snores is always assessed.

Postnasal drip and long-lasting cough

One of the main causes of a long-lasting cough in children is mucus draining from the back of the nose. Postnasal drip makes coughing worse especially at night and in the morning, and can cause a constant need to clear the throat and bad breath. Allergy, sinusitis and enlarged adenoids are the most common causes of postnasal drip.

A cough lasting more than three weeks should always be assessed. When causes in the nose and sinuses are treated, the cough often improves considerably. When needed, the assessment is done together with pediatric pulmonology or allergy specialists. For details, see our article on causes of chronic cough in children.

Hoarseness

Hoarseness in children is usually due to incorrect or excessive use of the voice. Children who shout a lot, sing loudly or strain their voice in noisy places can develop small nodules on the vocal cords. Colds and reflux can also cause temporary hoarseness.

Hoarseness lasting more than two weeks should be assessed, as should hoarseness accompanied by difficulty breathing or a change in the sound of crying. The vocal cords can be examined quickly with a thin endoscope. Voice therapy and voice hygiene advice are usually enough as treatment; surgery is rarely needed.

Earwax and outer ear canal problems

Earwax is a natural secretion that protects the ear canal and usually works its way out on its own. Cleaning with cotton buds can push the wax deeper and cause a blockage. A completely blocked ear canal causes reduced hearing and a feeling of fullness; in that case the ear is cleaned at the examination using appropriate methods.

Inflammation of the outer ear canal after swimming in pools and the sea in summer is also common in children. Pain that increases when the ear is touched, itching and discharge are typical symptoms. Gently drying the ears after bathing and swimming, and not putting any object into the ear canal, help prevent these problems.

Neck swelling and lymph nodes

Small lymph nodes that can be felt in a child's neck are usually due to upper respiratory infections and shrink within a few weeks after the infection has passed. This is generally not a cause for concern, and monitoring is enough.

However, swellings that grow quickly, are hard and painless, last more than a few weeks, or come with fever, night sweats and weight loss should always be assessed. Congenital cysts can also be noticed as a swelling in the neck. When needed, a detailed evaluation is done with tests such as ultrasound.

Newborn and school-age hearing screening

Newborn hearing screening is an important test done shortly after birth to detect hearing loss early. Hearing loss can still develop later in children who passed the screening, so it is important for families to keep observing how their child responds to sounds.

In school-age children, a hearing test should be done when attention problems, not hearing the teacher, a drop in school performance or a clear delay in speech is noticed. Detecting hearing loss early and managing it correctly is very important for the child's language development and learning.

How does the process work when surgery is needed?

Most pediatric ENT problems are resolved with medication and monitoring. Procedures such as tonsil or adenoid surgery or ear tube insertion are recommended only when they are truly necessary. The decision is made by weighing the family's observations, the examination findings and the test results together.

When a procedure is needed, the process is explained to the family in detail: all questions about preparation, anesthesia, the day of the procedure and the recovery period are answered. Families are given practical advice to help their child prepare for surgery without anxiety. Most of these procedures are short, and children usually go home the same day or the next day.

Pediatric ENT Antalya: how is the examination done?

In children, the examination is planned according to the child's age and level of anxiety. The aim is to obtain the right information as quickly as possible in a calm setting where the child feels safe. Young children usually sit on a parent's lap during the examination.

The ears are examined with an otoscope, and the nose and throat with lighted instruments. When the adenoids and the back of the nose need to be assessed, a thin, flexible endoscope may be used. This takes only a short time and is done gently, in a way suited to the child's age. When needed, tympanometry and age-appropriate hearing tests are added to the examination.

At the end of the examination, the findings are shared with the family in detail. Whether monitoring, medication or a procedure is needed is assessed individually for each child, and all of the family's questions are answered.

Pediatric ENT Antalya: what happens at the first visit?

The first visit begins with listening carefully to your child's complaints. You will be asked when the complaints started, how often they recur, about sleep patterns, hearing and speech development, medicines used before, and whether similar problems run in the family. This information determines what the examination will focus on.

Your child then has an ear, nose, throat and neck examination suited to their age. If needed, a hearing test, tympanometry or an endoscopic examination is arranged on the same day. At the end of the examination, the findings are explained to you in plain language, and the most suitable path for your child is decided together.

For families contacting us about pediatric ENT in Antalya, the most important thing is that the process is transparent and easy to understand. It is clearly explained when monitoring is enough, when treatment is needed and, if a procedure is recommended, why it is being recommended. The aim is for you to make the decision with all the information and with your questions answered.

When monitoring is needed, check-up dates are planned in advance. If you notice a new symptom in your child between check-ups, or if existing complaints get worse, you can contact us without waiting for the planned date.

How should you prepare for the examination?

Noting your child's complaints before the visit makes the assessment more efficient. Write down when the complaints started, how often they recur, in which seasons they get worse and which medicines have been used. Bring any previous blood tests, hearing tests and imaging results with you.

If your child snores or has pauses in breathing, a short video of their sleep is very valuable. Explain the examination to your child in simple, calm words; tell them the doctor will look into their ears and nose with a light and that it will not hurt. Bringing a favorite toy can also help them feel more comfortable.

Pediatric ENT Antalya: advice for families

Parents are often the first to notice changes in their child. Observing your child's sleep, hearing, speech and general behavior is the most important way to spot problems early. Take seriously any feedback from teachers about attention or hearing.

Simple measures such as not smoking at home, airing rooms regularly, reducing dust mites and rinsing the nose with salt water reduce many nose and ear problems. It is also important to use antibiotics only when recommended by a doctor and for the recommended length of time.

You can find reliable information on general child health and ear infections in the NHS guide to ear infections and the MedlinePlus ear infections page.

When should you seek care without delay?

Some symptoms should be assessed without waiting. The main ones are ear discharge with fever or swelling and redness behind the ear, marked pauses in breathing during sleep, difficulty breathing, a nosebleed that will not stop, inability to swallow, and a rapidly growing swelling in the neck.

Not responding to sounds, a clear delay in speech, snoring almost every night, tonsillitis several times a year and a runny nose lasting more than ten days are situations that call for a scheduled examination. A mild, short-lived cold or sore throat usually passes with monitoring.
